What is a solar-hydrogen boat? It’s a racing watercraft powered by energy from photovoltaic panels and a fuel cell. The challenge of building such a boat has been taken on by students from Poznań University of Technology, united in the PowerTrain Student Research Group. Their supervisor is Dr. Eng. Wojciech Cieślik, Associate Professor. As part of their work, the students research and design alternative drive systems used in various modes of transport – including passenger cars, boats, motorcycles, and delivery vehicles.
The POWERboat currently under construction is set to compete in the international Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. After several weeks of workshop work—requiring time and precision—such as assembling the milled frame components, filling with styrofoam, sanding, and applying putty, the boat’s mold was transported to a shipyard in Koszęcin. At the shipyard, the hull will be prepared for the lamination process. Here, every millimeter matters and has a significant impact on the final appearance of the laminate. Several people are working simultaneously on tasks such as precisely cutting plywood, sanding the laminate, and finishing the composite elements of the hull.
We encourage you to follow the team on social media, where they regularly share updates on their ongoing projects #DrogadoMonako.
